What is Stone Paper?

Stone Paper was developed as a sustainable product out of great respect for our Mother Earth. This involved pushing the limit on the amount of stone (calcium carbonate) in the material. This ultimately resulted in 80%, which is the basis for the name: stone paper.

We use recycled HDPE as a binder, a non-toxic, clean material that enhances the material's properties. Stone Paper's unique sustainability properties offer a significant advantage over pulp paper and synthetic materials.

But in terms of appearance, Stone Paper also has major advantages:

  • Stone Paper is ultra-matte, which gives it a very luxurious appearance
  • Stone Paper is waterproof, making it ideal for outdoor use
  • Stone Paper is flexible, so it opens flat when used with books, etc.
  • Stone Paper is available in many thicknesses, making it suitable for a wide variety of products.
  • Stone Paper is available in rolls and sheets, making it suitable for large and small productions
  • Stone Paper is new, so very suitable to stand out in various expressions

How is Stone Paper produced?

The ground stone, which enters the process as a waste product, is mixed with 20% HDPE, a clean plastic composed of carbon and hydrogen. The color of the ground stone is natural white, exactly matching the color of the final product, as HDPE is colorless. Therefore, we don't need to add a single drop of bleaching chemicals, unlike the massive peroxides, chlorides, and other chemicals used in the pulp paper industry.

This mixture is pressed through a die (extruded) in a short and highly efficient process into thin sheets of Stone Paper. At this point in the process, the material is still on large rolls, just over 110 cm wide.

Then, a top layer treatment is applied to both sides, allowing the material to be printed in any thickness using virtually any printing technique. As a final step in the process, the rolls are, if desired, cut back into sheets in a variety of sizes.

Compared to pulp papermaking, this process is incredibly simple and quick. Water is used only for drinking in Stone Paper, instead of being lost in massive quantities within the paper and air, as is the case with pulp papermaking.

The simplicity, efficiency, and quality of this process make Stone Paper unique, replicable, flexible, and sustainable. This forms the basis of our belief that with this technology and raw materials, we can facilitate the transition to a different way of looking at paper and packaging.
